Description

A very subtle and atmospheric beach scene by French Master Léon Laurent Galand (1872-1960) dating from the 1920s or 30s. Painted in oil on canvas with impasto, this is a lovely composition - I particularly like the two figures on the beach who, in the magnitude of the setting, become apparent only at second glance.

Léon Laurent Galand was a French painter and illustrator born in Montpellier in 1872.

Having studied with Ernest Michel , Gustave Moreau, Robert Delaunay , Fernand Cormon and Joseph Blanc, he showed his work at the Salon of French artists from 1904, where he obtained numerous medals for his paintings.

He also was awarded a second prize of Rome,

and was decorated for his achievements with the Legion of Honour in 1924.

Works by the artist can be found in Montpellier's Musée Fabré, the City Hall of Paris' 5th arronissement, in the collections of the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, and in the National Museum of Warsaw.

Measuring 33 x 41 cm, the painting is signed at the lower left. The overall framed size is 47 x 55 cm
