Set of Twelve George III Mahogany & Inlaid Dining Chairs Attributed to Gillows

18th century
Description

A rare set of twelve George III mahogany tablet-back dining chairs attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and dating to circa 1790. Comprising two carver armchairs and ten side chairs, the backs with box and ebony strung fiddleback mahogany rails flanked by fielded uprights with pointed terminals, on slender turned tapering legs to the front and slightly tapering square outsplayed legs to the rear with Gothic inspired corner brackets. The armchairs have elegant downswept and out curving arms on turned baluster shaped supports. All with comfy cover-over seats newly upholstered in green hide leather with close nailed studs. Previously owned by Liverpool University and inscribed by them to the underside.

All in solid mahogany, marks consistent with age and use including old repairs to the top rail of one armchair, and the fronts of the arms, chairs all solid with no movement in the joints. One armchair slightly lower than the other.

Dealers Notes

When buying it is important appreciate antiques have long histories of daily use and as such, over time they gain minor scratches, marks, knocks, shrinkage splits, signs of old woodworm, lifts and losses to veneer, which combine with care and years of polishing to create an individual character and patina. We describe the main flaws and those that fall outside of this bracket but cannot describe each marks separately and therefore suggest you do take the time to request extra photos. We do offer a 14 day money back guarantee if you are unhappy with your purchase but cannot refund the return shipping cost. If you are not sure please do not buy without clarifying or take the view that the only way to have it as near to new as possible is to have it fully and comprehensively restored.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III dining chairs, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, are characterised by classical proportions, refined mahogany construction, and understated decorative elements such as line inlay or delicate carving.

High-grade dense mahogany imported from the West Indies was the predominant timber, often paired with boxwood or satinwood stringing inlay, mortise and tenon joinery, and leather or wool damask upholstery.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut joinery, hand-planed surfaces, natural patina, correct period timber weight, and structural evidence of historic upholstery changes rather than modern machine techniques.

Pairing classical timber chairs with a contemporary minimalist dining table or modern artwork creates a compelling visual contrast between historic craft and clean modern lines.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources, apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, and clean leather upholstery gently with a dedicated leather conditioner.
