Antique Solid Silver Dish with Coat of Arms for Michael Bass, 1st Baron Burton - Garrard 1888

19th century
Description

We are delighted to have acquired and offer this splendid Victorian solid silver dish made by renowned maker James Garrard in London, 1888.

Garrard (founded in 1735), still producing fine silverware and jewellery today, throughout history has been serving and producing exceptional pieces of silver and jewellery for the British Royal Family.

The firm was appointed Crown Jeweller by Queen Victoria in 1843 which may come as no surprise upon examining the exceptional quality, craftsmanship and designs of their silverware/jewellery.

The dish features a mirror-like plain finish with a beautiful gadrooned border to contrast and accent the raised edge of the dish to its centre.

In addition to the impressive design of the dish itself, the engraved coat of arms at the top presents a noteworthy and fascinating history.

The coat of arms are those of Sir Michael Arthur Bass, 1st Baron Burton (12 November 1837 – 1 February 1909).

Michael Arthur Bass was born in Burton upon Trent as the elder son of Michael Thomas Bass, whose father William Bass was the founder of the brewery - Bass & Co.

Bass & Co (founded in 1777), still operates today in the town of Burton producing beer with their trademark Ale.

Michael Arthur Bass himself was a politician and philanthropist aside from being a brewer and part of the family business. Due to the great success of the business from previous generations, following in the footsteps of his father, Bass continued being a generous benefactor to Burton with numerous contributions such as the construction of Ferry Bridge, and St Chad's Church.

The accommodating nature of the dish allows for it to be used in the modern-day for multiple purposes from display to practical usage for serving hors d'oeuvres, sweets or consumables of your preference. One may enjoy the indulgence of using this dish whilst simultaneously admiring and appreciating its historic background with both the maker and coat of arms still being relevant and alive today.

The dish is fully hallmarked on the rear side with clear English marks.
