Superb Welsh oak coffer with a massive lid enclosing a panelled chest made from heavy oak planks. The front has four gothic-shaped raised and fielded panels above a pair of drawers, decorated with inlay patterns of a distinctive style associated with west Wales. The panels feature flowing plant forms emanating from vases and Celtic pinwheels, the drawers having a chequered line terminating in lozenges.
Towy Valley, Carmarthenshire, west Wales, circa 1770
(The handles, pin-hinges and parts of the drawer linings have been replaced, and the stile feet have been cut flush with the bottom rail)
