This is a fine quality, Victorian, silver-topped jar, made by Deakin and Francis Ltd, Birmingham, in 1893. It has multiple uses and was probably made for cosmetic cream. Retaining its original ground stopper, this piece also has its original interior gilding, which is in excellent, untouched condition. In my opinion it has received very little use. There is a star-cut motif on the base. This piece bears a well-engraved family crest, in the form of a beaver on the silver lid. It is just possible this refers to the Coram or Corham family from the West of England - who may be descendants of Captain Thomas Coram (c.1668 29 March 1751) a philanthropist and creator of The London Foundling Hospital in Lamb's Conduit Fields, Bloomsbury, for the purpose of looking after abandoned children. It is said to be the world's first incorporated charity. The jar is in excellent antique condition. The hallmarks are crisp and clear. The hinge is robust, firm and works perfectly. The silver lid fits exactly. In all, this piece would make a fine special present.

Height: 10.2cm (4 inches)
