Antique Early Georgian Queen Anne Oak Country Dresser - Open Backed Plate Rack

19th century
Description

Early Georgian Oak Country Dresser with plate rack.

Please note: Items placed on the dresser or plate rack are not included in the sale and are for display purposes only, but may be available separately.

An amazing example of a moderately sized very early dresser.

We bring to you this excellent rare example of an original early Georgian George III (circa 1760-1810) solid Oak country farmhouse dresser base. The dresser comes complete with an original plate rack of a very similar period. The plate rack is original and Georgian, however, is not original to this particular dresser. At some point, these 2 items have been married together but suit and fit perfectly.

The base features a 2 plank top with a simple moulded edge above 2 deep drawers with nailed plank construction as with all early furniture, before the refinement of the dovetail joint. The drawers are complete with solid lightly polished brass Georgian handles with escutcheon plates. The drawers are supported on a fine pierced fret-worked cross rail which is mimicked on the side panels of the dresser that all stand on Queen Anne hoof legs.

The plate rack although not original to the piece (which is quite common with these dressers, given the early age) is of the same quality and of similar age and complements the base. This very simple open 3 descending shelf plate rack features very similar fretwork design below its top moulded cornice and features plate grooves on all shelves. The rack simply stands on top of the dresser base with 2 old screws and a brass wall bracket for stability.

This dresser has a lovely lightly faded original oak colour with lots of patina and its original waxed finish. The dresser has at some stage of its long life suffered from woodworm which has been treated and is no longer active. The dresser has also had small repairs done in the past as expected with anything from this period.

This very usable small proportioned dresser is ideal for large hallways, dining rooms, country kitchens or would complement a large cottage.

We have sympathetically restored this item maintaining original patina by carefully waxing it to preserve the finish and give it a lovely natural sheen.

Please note; This item is in fantastic condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm, character and provenance.
