Antique Kalamkari Block Printed Textile Panel for Persian Market

Description

A fabulous Antique Kalamkari wall hanging, dating from the late 19th/early 20th century. The central medallion with a field of scrolling foliage and birds within multiple borders and a wide paisley band to the top and bottom edge, the reverse lined in coral colour homespun cotton/linen fabric.

Made in two halves and hand stitched with a central seam.

Kalamkari textiles are hand block printed on cotton using natural vegetable dyes including madder and indigo. Made in India for the Ottoman Islamic market.

In very good condition, the fabric remains strong, a few tiny pin pricks and very small area of staining but due to the profuse decoration not really noticeable.

This hanging is part of a collection of antique textiles and Islamic works of art collected by Sir Horace James Seymour GCMG CVO (1885 – 1978) whilst Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Iran from 1936 - 1939, and until recently remained in the Seymour family by descent.
