Georgian Mahogany Campaign Writing Slope

19th century
Description

A superb example of an early 19th Century campaign writing slope. It is made of mahogany with recessed brass military style handles, brass edges and the most wonderful ornate brass inlay. It also has a brass cartouche which is engraved "Mons P.Petit".

Inside, the box is fitted with a lovely blue/green writing surface with a tooled edge. It comes with a pair of brass capped military inkwells with screw tops, a pen tray and two lidded compartments. Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding three small drawers which springs open when a piece of wood on the far side of the box is pushed. There is also a long drawer on the side of the box which pulls out when a brass pin is lifted.

It is in excellent condition for its age. It comes with a working key for the interior slope, although not for the main box. A section of brass inlay on the front has been replaced at some point in its life (see photo) but there are no major damages to the wood exterior, just some small knocks and minor signs of age and use and it displays beautifully.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
