Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency parcel-gilt tables, popularised during the early nineteenth century in Britain, feature selective gilding over dark woods such as rosewood or mahogany. Makers such as Gillows of Lancaster integrated classical Greco-Roman motifs, carved acanthus leaves, and white marble tops into these formal reception pieces.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid and veneered timbers including rosewood, mahogany, and painted pine for simulated finishes. The decorative elements combined hand-carved giltwood or gesso with natural marble slabs, often imported from Italian quarries.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-carved joinery, original oil or water gilding showing age-appropriate wear, and marble slabs with historic hand-tooled undersides. Examining the frame reveals period construction techniques, hand-sawn secondary timbers, and undisturbed oxidisation.

These tables function effectively as symmetrical accents in entrance halls, hallway alcoves, or flanking a central fireplace. Combining historical gilt furniture with contemporary artwork or minimalist lighting creates a balanced, layered interior aesthetic.

Dust giltwood surfaces gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water or liquid cleansers that dissolve water gilding. Wipe marble tops with a damp, neutral pH cloth, ensuring immediate drying to prevent stone etching or staining.
