a closely matched pair of scottish 19th century mahogany cockpen armchairs - CATEGORY: ANTIQUE CHAIRS - DATED 19TH CENTURY

A Closely Matched Pair Of Scottish 19th Century Mahogany Cockpen Armchairs

£5,750    $7,486    €6,831
upholstered in Lochcarron tartan.

These chairs are typical examples from the cockpen family of seat furniture which generally all share the same distinctive form of leg: of round section, the front legs outsplayed and with a bead to the leading edge, characterised especially by those with the lattice or Chinese backs.

The form can be associated originally with the Edinburgh firm of Young & Trotter; a wing chair is known with lining canvas stamped with their name (presumably previously used for shipping material to them).
