Large 19thc. Gilt Cushion Mirror

19th century
Description

This Large 19thc. gilt cushion mirror was made circa 1885.

It is of a very impressive size and was made for a grand home, and for a long period of time in an important house in Scandinavia.

The mirror is of cushion form (cushion mirrors derive their name, as the central mirror is raised forward in a cushion like padded manner, while the outside frame stays flat to the wall) with the central arched hand bevelled glass raised by gilt acanthus corners. Around the central mirror to all sides are separate mirror glass panels with intaglio star decoration.

The outer frame has a central shield to the crest with a roaring lion, with large oak leaves to each side, cornucopia displaying fruit and foliage are draped to each shoulder.

At the bottom of the frame, it is adorned with another smaller lion head and again cornucopia with apple, pomegranate, and foliage. The gilder has cleverly used their art by delicately using red bole to pick out the seeds in the pomegranate head, and the tongue of the lion. This all adds to the subtlety and interest this mirror will give you.

This magnificent mirror is decorated in varying bole colours, that give this so many different textures, shades of gilt and colour.

We have used our specialist gilder, who has sympathetically brought this back to its former glory. She has worked on the Royal collection Windsor Castle, and other Royal collections as well as other important homes.

Imagine how much pleasure you will have in owning this quite magnificent mirror, it will look wonderful in so many of your prominent display walls.
