Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Composition clam shells are decorative replicas of the Tridacna gigans shell, produced using cast plaster, cement, or composite materials. Popularised in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they offered an accessible alternative to natural giant clam shells for grand interior decoration.

These items were cast using plaster of Paris, stone composite, or fine cement poured into moulds taken from natural specimens. The exterior surface was typically hand-finished to replicate the layered growth ridges and scalloped edges characteristic of real oceanic giant clams.

Authentic vintage examples exhibit substantial weight, smoothed cast seam lines, and subtle surface patination consistent with age. Unlike modern plastic or resin reproductions, plaster or cement compositions feel cool to the touch and exhibit micro-cracking or minor wear along high-relief edges.

These versatile vessels serve as striking dining table centrepieces, console table displays, or bathroom focal points. They can be left empty as sculptural objects, filled with rolled linen towels, or used as catch-alls on large sideboards.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to remove accumulation from deep ridges. Avoid using water or chemical solvent cleaners on unsealed plaster or composite surfaces, as moisture can cause discolouration or deterioration.
