Both these woods are in superb condition, revealing lustrous rich colour and grain. Encircling the chequerboard is a walnut freize, inlaid with a sumptuous and pretty botanical design. The corners are outswept to allow for the side frames of the drawer, which sits below the chequerboard. The drawer, with burr walnut front and two ebonised knobs on each side, can be pulled open from each side - so that each player can access his/her chess or other playing pieces from the same side. This is a charming and unique piece of furniture, I haven’t seen one like it. Perfect for display as well as use as a games table.
