Inlaid Mahogany Writing Desk by Edwards and Roberts

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine quality late 19th century writing table by the renowned firm of cabinet makers Edwards and Roberts of London. Whilst this particular desk does not bear the makers stamp we are certain that it is by Edwards and Roberts (for comparison see our listing ref 804650, internal ref 619). Very well constructed in solid mahogany with attractive mahogany veneers in the Sheraton style. Decorated with inlaid stringing and banding in boxwood and satinwood throughout. Further embellished with inlaid garlands, harebells, swags and urns. The superstructure with a series of 4 short stationary drawers, flanking a central fitted compartment with a lift up lid, all surmounted with a solid brass gallery. The table itself with 3 drawers (lockable, key supplied) and a sumptuous black leather writing surface. All standing on long elegant tapering legs which terminate in their original solid brass castors. This desk is finished to the rear so could be free standing within a room if desired. Sympathetically refinished in our workshops and now offered for sale in excellent condition with a wonderful colour and finish.

Dimensions:

Width 107cms

Depth 60cms

Overall height 95cms

Table height 73.5cms

Knee-hole clearance 60cms

Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp. Edwards & Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
