FAQs

A Queen Anne toilet mirror is a tabletop dressing glass produced in the early eighteenth century, typically framed in figured walnut or burr walnut veneer. It characteristically features an adjustable swivelling mirror glass mounted above a shallow box base housing small drawers for vanity items.

These pieces were constructed using a secondary carcass of pine or oak, veneered with walnut cut in geometric or figured patterns. The mirror glass was silvered using a mercury process, and hardware such as handles, hinges, and escutcheons were cast from brass.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut dovetail joints on the small drawers, original foxing and oxidation on mercury-silvered glass, and hand-planed timber surfaces. Unfinished secondary woods inside drawers and underneath the base also indicate period construction.

Place the mirror atop a contemporary sideboard, chest of drawers, or console table to create an accent piece. Combining warm walnut timber with neutral backdrops allows the period timber grain to contrast with modern decor.

Dust the timber with a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the finish and prevent veneer lifting. Avoid spraying liquid glass cleaner directly onto the original mirror surface to prevent moisture from seeping into the wooden frame or deteriorating backing materials.
