Rosewood tea caddy of sarcophagus form with Tunbridge Ware inlay and a parquetry top;  standing on bun feet with a two-lidded interior.  Lovely colour and patination.  Circa 1830

We deal in 18th and early 19th century furniture, barometers and clocks. We choose our stock for its originality and for the quality of its colour, patination and design.

We are members of the BADA. We do not exhibit at fairs preferring to deal from our Cambridge shop where we hold Open Weekends from time to time.

Tunbridge ware is a distinctive style of decorative English marquetry made from tiny, naturally coloured wood tesserae arranged to form intricate geometric patterns, floral motifs, or landscapes.

Primary construction relied on a solid timber carcass, typically pine or mahogany, veneered with cut rosewood and detailed with inlaid strips of mixed native woods, brass keyhole escutcheons, and turned wood or metal feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, age-appropriate shrinkage lines in the wood veneers, original keyhole mechanisms, and natural colour variations in the wood inlay from light exposure over time.
