Georgian Watercolour on Ivory Miniature of a Gentleman C1820

19th century
Description

A fine Georgian era watercolour on ivory miniature portrait of a young gentleman dating to c1820. This miniature portrait is signed on lower right by the artist F. Turner. The gentleman is very finely painted, in every detail - hair, eyebrows, nose, lips, with a beautiful slightly tanned flesh tone. The clothing is also detailed, the cotton stock tied with a neat central bow. The coat and inner black satin waistcoat, folding out over the lapel, is typical of the Georgian era. The cream background sets off the black clothing and young man’s dark hair and complexion. The back has been opened at some point and a piece of ply holds the miniature in place with the sealing pins. As I was able to open the back, I was delighted to find that the miniature is backed by the artist’s advertisement or calling card details. F. Turner plied his trade as a miniature painter in Canterbury, Kent - that at least is evident. The oval miniature is housed in its original lacquered papier-mâché mache frame with brass surround and floral moulded hanging ring. The lacquered surround has dulled with age - best left as it is.
