Exotic Toledo steel and palm wood dress cane, Spain, circa 1870

Damascene steel ball knob with gold inlay work engraved floral and banded arcade decoration.

The top of the ball set with elaborate monogram ES in two colour gold.

Fine dense palm wood shaft, brass and steel ferule.

Diameter of steel ball 1,3/4" or 44mm

Diameter of shaft 13/16" or 21mm

Length 35,1/2" or 90cm, weight 443 grams.

All in very good sound condition, some losses to the gold mostly on the shaft mount.

Damascene is an ancient metalworking technique involving the inlaying of soft gold or silver wire into a cross-hatched, oxidized steel surface. Made famous in Toledo, Spain, during the nineteenth century, this artisan craft was frequently applied to luxury accessories, including fine dress canes and sword hilts.

These canes generally feature a blued or blackened steel knob inlaid with 24-carat gold or silver foil and wire. The shaft is crafted from exotic dense hardwoods, such as palm wood, partridge wood, or ebony, to provide structural strength and visual contrast.
