Large Early Victorian Ship's Wheel in Untouched Condition, Circa 1850

19th century
For Sale by WelshAntiques
Description

A rare example of an early ship's wheel of large size and substantial proportions in untouched original condition. The wheel is made from teak - the preferred timber for nautical fittings - and has finely-moulded edges and stout detailed turned spindles terminating in handles. There is a wonderful colour and surface. The brass fittings on the hub and around the rim have aged to a verdigris patination through exposure to the atmosphere.

It may benefit from a polish for dispaly purposes, according to taste.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, ships wheels served as the primary mechanical steering apparatus for sailing vessels and early steamships, designed to manually control the rudder via mechanical linkages.

These wheels were typically constructed from dense, water-resistant hardwoods such as teak, mahogany, or oak, reinforced with brass or iron banding and a heavy central metal boss.

Authentic period wheels feature hand-turned wooden spokes, pegged joinery, signs of functional wear around the handles, and natural surface oxidisation on the brass elements.

A original ships wheel functions effectively as a focal wall hanging above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within an entryway to add nautical character.

Dust the wooden spokes regularly with a dry cloth and apply natural wax paste periodically, avoiding chemical polishers that disrupt original brass patination.
