Description

Fabulous quality pair of large bronze cavalier figure lamps with original carved oak pedestals c.1880. Very impressive size, standing 92" tall from the floor to the top of the shades, designed for either side of a staircase or doorway. Exceptionally well cast in bronze as two finely dressed cavaliers with King Charles style beards, plumed hats, capes and long boots with spurs. Each has a sword on his hip and stands griping a long halberd or similar which (probably originally an oil or gas lamp) carries a single bulb inside glass shades modelled as flaming torches. Unusual steel grey finish with gilded highlights to the costume. Stood on 11" diameter bases cast with border of oak leaves and acorns, a reference to the royal oak in which the future King Charles II of England hid to escape the Roundheads following the Battle of Worcester. Sold together with their original pedestals (43" tall and 17½" square at the base). In oak, elaborately moulded and carved with 17th.c. style decoration on each side and flanked with turned columns at the corners. Excellent conditon, rewired and PAT tested. The pedestals have been cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
