The Duchess of Sutherland Cripples Guild was formed by Lady Millicent Fanny St.Clair-Erskine, Duchess of Sutherland, in 1900 with the objective of providing for disabled children and adults injured in the harsh working conditions of the pottery trade. It ceased in 1920 but in the latter years it had a retail shop in London to raise money for those disabled.
On offer is a sterling silver mustard pot with a large domed lid with a finial and standing firmly on 3 bracket feet. It is in very good condition with just a few minor dings through usage. There is a substantial loop handle and both the lid and body are clearly hallmarked MS for Millicent Sutherland and in addition on the base DSCG.
This very worthwhile charitable venture lasted for only 20 years and silver work was produced for only part of that time so they have become very collectible.
