Of distinctive Edinburgh form, the frames with pierced ladderbacks, on square-section legs joined by H-stretchers, and stuffover seats which we have reupholstered with golden velvet.
The frames have clearly been waxed down to resemble mahogany at some point (as was common) which has polished away revealing the grain of the elm; there are traces of old minor worm damage.
Attributed to William and James Hamilton, Edinburgh.
These chairs can be related to identical documented sets made by William Hamilton (and his son James) for Trinity House, Leith and Penicuik House, Midlothian, in the 1770s.
Similar examples were recorded at Keir House, Stirlingshire (sold Christie's 1970s) and Newbattle Abbey, Midlothian (sold Sotheby's May 2017).
We also have a mahogany pair, of similar date and clearly from the same workshop, available, together with four further rather good Edwardian copies.
