Exceptional Early 1900's Signed 39'' Carved Sculpture Statue St Anthony & Jesus
Brief Description:
On offer is a rare and exceptional quality tall, intricately carved early 1900's wooden sculpture by Czechoslovakian Sculptor & pedagogue:
'Bohumil Kafka (1878-1942).
Bohumil Kafka was a Czech Sculptor and pedagogue. He studied in Prague with sculptor Josef V'aclav Myslbek before moving to Vienna and Paris to continue his studies. He worked in London, Berlin and Rome before returning and settling in Prague. He frequently worked in an Expressive symbolist style, was a noted animalier as well as being known for his decorative sculpture. He was considered a predecessor to the Art Nouveau style and was highly influenced by the works of Auguste Rodin. Two of his most noted works are on permanent display in Vitkov Hill, Prague, and the Prague Observatory.
The above outstanding example depicts St. Anthony Of Padua, holding Baby Jesus, and it measures a very impressive 39'' tall and dates to circa 1900-1915.
The piece retains the fabulous original early 1900s paint, and It is signed to the base: 'Kafka - Cerveny Kostelec'.
The patination of the Sculpture, together with the lifelike features that are displayed throughout the carvings is really very special indeed.
Original, signed: Kafka
Circa: 1900-1915
Offered in an overall fabulous original condition commensurate with age.
There are a few minor surface marks, together with two or three aged wood splits - see images.
The tip of one of Jesus's small fingers is chipped/missing at the end, and the piece appears to have once had a thin metal halo rising above St. Anthony's head. None of the above minor cosmetic imperfections detracts but they are all mentioned for accuracy.
Overall Measurements:
Height: 39'' | 99.6 cm
Width: 19'' | 48.2 cm
Depth: 11'' | 27.9 cm
