Historically referred to as Guanpijin or specimen chests, these portable hardwood boxes feature internal drawers behind a single or double hinged door. They were designed to store writing implements, personal jewellery, seals, and small curated collections.

These boxes were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as rosewood (Hongmu), zitan, or huali, paired with hand-cut brass corner brackets, hinges, and decorative faceplates.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery, rich natural wood grain with dark reddish-brown tones, aged brass hardware attached with small pins, and smooth internal drawer fitting.

These compact cabinets work well placed on a desk, sideboard, or bookshelf, serving as both a functional storage container for desk accessories and a decorative object.
