This is a fine and rare gilt bronze striking mantel clock with an 8 day movement and enamelled dial. Made in an exquisite rococo style by L. LeRoy Paris in the early 19th century, and is engraved by LeRoy on the back plate. The case is a unique single piece cast and has 6 hand bevelled lead crystal glass panels giving a skeleton type look. It also has a double faced sunburst pendulum.
LeRoy Luxury clockmaker and master of extreme precision. The origins of the Leroy firm can be traced back to the eighteenth century, and more precisely to 1747, when Basile Le Roy (1731-1803) began his apprenticeship with Sr. Joseph Quétin, a master clockmaker in Paris. Its workshops, officially installed in the arcades of the Palais Royal in 1785, have written some of the most beautiful pages in the history of French watchmaking and timekeeping, drawing deeply on the passion of two dynasties of craftsmen whose genius has been inspired as much by the applied arts as by science.
Now installed opposite the Elysée Palace in the Rue du Faubourg St. Honoré, it relies on its workshops in Besançon and its close co-operation with the national observatory to continue its pursuit of excellence in chronometry. With a harvest of gold medals and first-class certificates to its name, L.Leroy equips an impressive number of military and merchant fleets, although never neglecting its prestigious clients in the major European cities.
