Antique Longcase Clock

18th century
Description

A slim, well proportioned Georgian longcase clock. A swan-neck pediment surmounted by 3 brass finials. Fine fretwork to the hood with gilded capitals to the hood columns. An oak case with walnut crossbanding. Fluted trunk side columns and a raised plinth to the base with canted corners. Ogee bracket feet. A fine brass and silvered dial with central engraving. Signed 'Sam Harley, Salop' to the chapter ring. Date and seconds indicators. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell.

Samuel Harley of Shrewsbury is recorded in Elliotts' 'Shropshire Clock and Watchmakers' book as working 1766-1799. He worked on the local Church clock and was also Major of Shrewsbury in 1784.
