Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1900s.
The other end, also with a perfectly operational hinged lid is where the matches would be stored with a strike to the top of the box.

The holder stands on two small silver ball feet. Once the match has been struck it would be placed in the holder next to the strike and the wax melted from the flame for the sealing of letters with a personal seal.

All pieces have matching hallmarks for London 1900 together with the makers marks for Samuel Jacobs. Wonderful condition, measuring 9 1/2" in length.
