Description

This rare storage bag-face was woven by Luri nomads in Luristan, western Persia circa 1900 - 1920. The lower panel just above the knotted-pile base consists of stylised horses; the panel above contains camels walking across the desert; the third panel up has oposing birds and the very top panel depicts what look like snakes! An extremely interesting find.

See James Opie's 'Tribal Rugs' for earlier examples on pages 50 & 51 and again on pages 122 & 123 where he makes an important symbolic feature of this rare type of weaving.
