In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
The lid opens to reveal a small internal candle box and large blacksmith made strap hinges.
It is in very good condition for its age and has a superb colour and grain. It strong and sturdy with some minor signs of age and use, some small knocks and surface marks here and there but nothing detrimental. There have been some repairs around the hinges (see photos) but they are in good order and the whole piece displays very well.
