A Pair of 19th Century Settees

19th century
Description

Made from mahogany and in the Georgian style, this pair of settees have carved decoration to the arms and cabriole legs. They are a great size, comfortable to sit in and very elegant in design. They have recently been purchased from a private house in France and as such will benefit from a light polish and being reupholstered. The price given is as seen but a price for polishing and re-upholstery can be supplied upon request. Large pairs of Country House settees of this type are very difficult to find and the use of the shell decoration on the leg points to a possible original Irish origin.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A settee from the 19th century typically features an upholstered seat and back designed for two or more people, incorporating traditional forms such as camelback curves, scrolled armrests, and carved timber supports.

Cabinetmakers utilised solid hardwoods like mahogany or walnut for the exposed frame and legs, combined with traditional interior upholstery materials such as horsehair padding, steel coil springs, and woven damask textiles.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, hand-stitched under-upholstery structures, hand-carved details on cabriole or turned legs, and wear patterns consistent with age along the lower frame.

Arranging a matching pair of upholstered settees opposite one another around a low contemporary coffee table creates a symmetrical, conversational layout that balances historical detail with clean modern lines.

Dust woven upholstery regularly using a soft vacuum brush attachment, position pieces away from direct sunlight to reduce fabric discolouration, and apply specialized beeswax to timber legs while avoiding contact with the fabric.
