Art Deco or Deco ,

is an influential visual arts design style which first appeared in France during the 1920s, flourished internationally during the 30s and 40s.

It is an eclectic style that combines traditional craft motifs with Machine Age imagery and materials. The style is often characterized by rich colors, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation.

Deco emerged from the Interwar period when rapid industrialization was transforming culture. One of its major attributes is an embrace of technology. This distinguishes Deco from the organic motifs favored by its predecessor Art Nouveau .

Historian Bevis Hillier defined Art Deco as "an assertively modern style ... [that] ran to symmetry rather than asymmetry, and to the rectilinear rather than the curvilinear; it responded to the demands of the machine and of new material ... [ and] the requirements of mass production ".

During its heyday Art Deco represented luxury, glamor, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco novelty lighting from the 1920s and 1930s combined functional illumination with modern decorative motifs, frequently depicting themes of modern transport, speed, and leisure such as yachts, aeroplanes, and stylized figures. These lighting pieces incorporated bold geometric outlines, streamlined silhouettes, and contrast between polished metal surfaces and diffused glass.

Art Deco table lamps were typically constructed using chrome-plated brass or spelter bases paired with press-moulded frosted, clear, or opalescent glass shades. Chrome plating was widely adopted during the late 1920s for its durable, mirror-like finish that complemented the contemporary aesthetic of the era.

Authentic period pieces exhibit period-correct construction details, such as age-appropriate patina or minor pitting on the chrome plating, original bayonet or screw-fit shade galleries, and cast metal weighted bases. The glass shades often feature sharp geometric moulding and fit into period-specific collar mountings rather than modern threaded fittings.

A period chrome yacht lamp works effectively as a sculptural accent on a dark wood sideboard, an office desk, or a shallow console table. The reflective chrome surface and geometric frosted glass shade create strong contrast against matt wall finishes and modern minimal joinery.

Clean chrome components using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners that can strip the thin metallic plating. Clean the frosted glass shade separately in warm soapy water, ensuring it is fully dried before reattaching, and ensure all internal wiring is inspected by a qualified electrician to meet modern safety standards.
