Mid-size 9ct gold Buren Grand Prix wrist watch, 1956.

The watch has a Swiss 17-jewel hand-winding movement, signed Buren Grand Prix, which is working nicely.

The name Grand Prix relates to prizes won at World Fairs. Watch manufacturers were very proud of these medals as they gave official recognition of a watch brand’s reliability, quality and style. Pocket watches often carried details of medals won on the inner movement cover, while wrist watches, such as this one, carried the Grand Prix sub name.

The watch measures 30mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. Although originally designed as a man’s watch, it is really a mid-size piece which would suit a man with a slimmer wrist or it would work nicely as a lady’s watch. The case is 9 carat gold and there are hallmarks inside the case back for Birmingham 1956, with a case maker’s mark for Aaron Dennison, a Birmingham based case manufacturer who supplied various watch makers with cases.

The case back has a little scratching but overall the condition is good for a 1950s piece. The back of the watch has a long service inscription from Imperial Chemical Industries.

The lens is in lovely condition.

The signed dial is in its original finish with original hands, subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
