Beautiful Talish Long Rug, East Caucasus, Circa 1880, 2.62m X 1.07m

19th century
Description

This is a very beautiful and elegant Caucasian rug from the Talish district of the East Caucasus. 19th century Talish rugs are known for their fine weave and their plain abrashed fields, the so-called Mete Hane design, normally in a sapphire blue. This piece however, has a charming aquamarine central field filled with a pretty repeating floral design. The borders are the typical borders one associates with Talish rugs. The main ivory border filed with repeating roundels is ubiquitous, as well as the minor guard stripes. Dating this rug has been helped by the use of both a lovely organic purple and fuchsine, which one can comfortably date in the last quarter of the 19th century. The texture is thin and fine. One can say this piece has great presence. In generally good condition, retaining its original ends and selvages. Professionally cleaned and ready for immediate use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Talish rugs originate from the southeastern Caucasus region near the Caspian Sea, distinguished by their narrow, elongated runner format, distinct geometric borders, and central fields often rendered in indigo or light blue shades with repeating stylized motifs.

These rugs were hand-knotted by village weavers using local hand-spun sheep wool for the pile, warp, and weft, coloured with natural vegetable and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces feature all-wool hand-spun construction, symmetrical knotting, subtle natural dye variations known as abrash, and characteristic multi-band geometric rosette borders.

An antique long rug provides texture and historical grounding when laid in a hallway, entrance corridor, or along the side of a bed, pairing well with contemporary minimalist or classical timber furnishings.

Suction vacuum without a rotating brush bar, place a protective underlay beneath to minimise friction, rotate periodically to distribute foot traffic evenly, and spot-clean immediately with wool-safe detergents.
