Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Alphabet plates were introduced in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as educational tools designed to combine childhood learning with mealtime. Produced primarily in English pottery hubs like Staffordshire, these ceramic pieces featured embossed letters around the rim paired with transfer-printed central scenes ranging from moral tales to sporting events.

These plates were typically crafted from pearlware, creamware, or soft-paste earthenware. The outer rims were impressed or moulded with capital letters of the alphabet, while the central motifs were produced using monochrome copper-plate transfer printing, frequently finished with hand-applied enamel colour washes.

Authentic period examples generally display fine surface crazing, slight irregularities in the glaze, and minor alignment imperfections in the transfer print. The ceramic body is often lighter in weight than modern reproductions, with evidence of stilt marks or unglazed spots on the underside from kiln firing.

Decorative nursery plates are best displayed upright using discreet plate stands on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or inside glazed cabinets. Grouping several plates together on a wall panel or displaying a single themed piece alongside vintage books adds character to a traditional or eclectic interior.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to clean the surface. If washing is necessary, use lukewarm water with a mild pH-neutral soap, avoiding immersion or harsh scrubbing, and dry thoroughly immediately; never place historical earthenware in a dishwasher or microwave.
