Pair of late C18th / early C19th Italian classical engravings after Francesco Piranesi.
Now framed in contemporary gilded frames , large companion pair of black and white engraving studies of the statues of ‘Callipygian Venus’ ( ‘Venus of the beautiful buttocks’) and ‘Germanicus Caesar’ depicted in the guise of Mercury , messenger of the Gods .
Clearly struck images in excellent condition, wide mounts with decorative corners within the gilded frames each continuously inscribed in Latin text ‘Millennium Pax Homnibus ‘ .
Francesco Piranesi (1758-1810 ) was the son of Giovanni Battista Piranesi the renowned Italian engraver of classical subjects , and who continued his father’s work .
