Sold by: Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this monumental Meiji period (1868-1912 ) fish tank or jardiniere, manufactured in the Hizen province in Arita around 1890 , the huge pot is predominantly decorated in typical Arita ware blue and white palette depicting a raging river below a mountainous pine forest, amidst this natural setting the artist has captured in polychrome decoration the moment a huge eagle swoops to pick up a tiger cub, the adult tiger leaps through the pine trees to defend its young cub, meanwhile another startled and clearly frightened tiger cub sits cowering beside the river bank, the artist has captured this dramatic scene of nature in an almost comical cartoon fashion, the jardiniere is nicely signed to the underside and clearly shows the spit marks from being suspended in the kiln, can you imagine the degree of difficulty potting an item this size and then firing it in a wood kiln, a fantastic addition to your Japanese themed room ...
