Derby Porcelain Plaque. James Rouse Senior, Dated 1885.

Description

Fine Royal Crown Derby porcelain plaque, painted by James Rouse Senior, dated 1885. The plaque beautifully hand painted, with a sumptuous study of Spring flowers, upon a marble plinth.

Signed – J. Rouse Senior, Derby.

Printed factory mark, and date code for 1885 in iron red to the reverse.

James Rouse Senior is regarded as one of England’s finest painters on porcelain. Born in 1803, he eventually became apprentice to William ‘Quaker’ Pegg at the Derby factory. He also worked at Coalport, and exhibited work at both the 1851, and 1862 Exhibitions. He returned to Derby by 1881, and was commissioned to to work on the William E. Gladstone service in 1888. He passed away, aged 85, in 1888.

Width: 20.5 cm, 8 1/8”.

Condition: Excellent. No damage. No restoration.
