Description

Early C19th patinated plaster classical-style bust study of a young boy .

Well-modelled plaster bust of a boy raised on an integral circular moulded socle base , the whole decorated with a simulated ‘faux bronze’ patination . The subject depicted wearing a classical style draped robe in the ancient Romano-Greco fashion.

The face with a pleasing expression showing a subtle smile , giving the study a warm demeanour and highly decorative appeal.

Though the subject is unknown, it is probable the sitter is a young member of an aristocratic family depicted in the popular Roman classical-style of the period.

Minor chips and losses to the patinated surface commensurate with age .

Plaster busts rose to prominence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as part of the Neoclassical movement and the Grand Tour tradition. Collectors purchased these sculpted portrait studies to display classical ideals, historical figures, and anatomical studies within private residences and academic institutions.
