Ersari Chuval, Afghanistan, Circa 1900, 1.62m X 0.96m

1900 - 1920
Description

The Ersari were one of the larger Turkmen tribes who eventually settled in northern Afghanistan. Their weavers continued to make domestic artifacts well into the 20th century. This large chuval is a very good example of the work of the talented Ersari weavers. It has wonderful glossy wool and good dyes. The guls are well drawn and well-spaced. Note the attractive row of stylised plants in the elem. The kilim at the top end has been sewn under, a clear sign that this weaving was originally used as a large storage bag. In almost perfect pile, it has survived in remarkable condition, and even the original selvages and ends are intact. A very good size, it lends itself to being used as a decorative rug in many situations.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chuval is a large traditional storage bag woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes, such as the Ersari, used historically to store clothing and household items inside a yurt.

These textiles are hand-knotted using wool pile on a wool warp and weft, often utilising natural plant and mineral dyes to achieve rich red tones.

Authentic pieces typically feature distinctive octagonal gol motif patterns, a patterned lower apron known as an elem, and hand-spun wool showing natural colour variations.

A chuval can be displayed as a decorative wall hanging, draped over a bench, or laid as an accent rug to add geometric pattern and rich warm colour to a room.

Vacuum gently on low suction without a rotating brush, protect from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and clean professionally with specialist rug restoration services.
