Excellent Georgian Oak and Walnut Banded Dresser C. 1760

18th century
Description

A beautiful and fine quality George III oak dresser with a truly superb colour and in excellent original condition.

.

Two banks of three graduated drawers and a long frieze drawer over the cupboard.

.

Each of the drawers is cross banded with figured walnut and retain their original heavy brass handles and escutcheons. the drawers are oak lined with fine boards and solid dovetails. The boarded top is original also and is deeply crossbanded in walnut - as on the drawer fronts, the crossbanding has been shaped to each corner - an attractive detail seen in high quality examples.

.

The central double door cupboard opens to an fixed shaped oak shelf. Bottom and back boards original as are the well shaped feet.

.

Locks are old brass replacements which have been blanked off and do not work. The lock to the cupboard is present and working and there is an old key.

.

The flanking curved oak columns are another indication of the high quality here and the whole dresser is particularly well made, usable and solid with a fielded panelled back.

.

Minor knocks, scuffs and dents consistent with age and use. Some shrinkage gaps to the boards in the drawer bases and a very few small veneer restorations to the walnut cross banding as is always found on pieces of this age. A fine sliver of oak is lost from the back edge of the top (closest to the wall) and not noticeable. There is also some shrinkage to the fielded panel on the right hand side of the dresser.

.

A very lovely example, from a private home where it has been well cared for.

.

Exceptionally heavy!

Width is 80 inches, depth is 23 inches, height is 36 inches.
