An important George II mahogany caddy-topped chest, circa 1730-1740 labelled, Giles Grendey.
The ‘caddy’ moulded top sits above a brushing slide over four long graduating drawers, each cock-beaded and bearing their original open fret handles and skeleton escutcheons. The chest is raised on original bracket feet and Lignum vitae roller casters.
It should be noted - That this is the most recent discovery labelled by the eminent maker, Giles Grendey. There are very few labelled examples known. To put it into context, I believe this is the third caddy-topped chest in some 300 years to be discovered bearing his original trade label.
Giles Grendey was born at Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire in 1693. His workshop was at Aylesbury House, St. John’s Square, Clerkenwell, London and is most famously known to have supplied an order to the duke of Infantado for his castle of Lazcano in Spain. Very few pieces are.
