The engsi was made as a door-rug - hung at the entrance of the Turkmen yurt on the inside and symbolising the gateway to Paradise. The central 'cross' divides the field into the four gardens of Paradise, the pentagonal shape or 'kejebe' at the top represents power and fertility and the lower elem is the 'sky-door' or gateway to Paradise.
This ranks as one of the best Teke ensis of this period - a truly superb rug.
