Finely cast pair of early C19th Regency period bronze candlesticks of classical Athenienne form .

Well drawn pair of patinated cast bronze candlesticks of classical design . The triform bases with well-defined cast motif detail, supporting elegant triple shaped monopodia uprights with lion’s paw feet and scrolled leaf details .

The candle-nozzle tops with cast stiff-leaf classical decoration and integral bobeches. The underside of the candle-holders with hanging berry or grape inverted finials.

In excellent original condition with a wonderful mellow ‘golden’ consistent colour and patination.

The Athenienne form originated in the late eighteenth century and flourished during the French Empire and British Regency periods. Inspired by an ancient Roman bronze tripod burner discovered at Pompeii, the design features slender tripod legs, classical palmettes, and foliate motifs adapted for domestic lighting and ornamentation.

Early nineteenth-century bronze candlesticks were cast using the lost-wax or sand-casting technique. Craftsmen assembled individual cast elementssuch as tripods, sconces, and plinthsbefore applying chasing work by hand and applying a chemical patination or lacquer finish.
