Victorian Mahogany Collectors Specimen Cabinet by J.t.crockett & Son

19th century
Description

A superb quality Victorian specimen cabinet by J.T.Crockett & Son. The cabinet itself is mahogany and it stands on a plinth base with concealed castors below. It is a large and impressive piece with 16 drawers enclosed behind a lockable door with arched glass front. Each drawer has turned wooden knobs, a metal name plate and they are covered with a glass frame which slots across on brass rods. The cabinet was originally used for a collection of butterflies and insects and each drawer has its original paper lining with cork style lining below to enable pins to be gently pushed through.

This particular cabinet has a lockable back panel which enables the rear of the drawers to be accessed so they can each be locked in place with small brass bolts (a few missing). Both the front door and back panel come with working keys.

It has its original maker's label on the inside of the door for "J.T.Crockett & Son. Practical Cabinet Makers and Naturalists. Princes St. Cavendish Sq. London, W"

It is in good original condition and displays very nicely. There are signs of age and use and it has picked up a few knocks, scuffs and marks over the years but nothing untoward and it has a good aged patina. The drawers all open and close smoothly and are generally clean and tidy inside with a few small stains and marks on the linings.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
