19th Century Folk Art Lions Den Royal Circus Oil Painting Signed

19th century
Description

19th Century Folk Art Oil Painting Signed .

After W.H. Rogers (1825-1873). In the Lion's Den, oil on board, depicting a young man seated between a lion and a tiger in a cage, the tiger licking the man's cheek and a liger cub playing at her feet, signed 'Cobbe G' lower right. Several artists flocked to study and paint the unusual hybrids .

W.H. Rogers' original painting is housed in The British Folk Art Collection, Compton Verney, Warwickshire. The collection can be seen online, where the following information is given "Rogers’ intimate painting depicts a keeper sitting uneasily with a lion, tiger and three liger cubs in a travelling cage. Ligers are the offspring of lions and tigers, and were in several travelling menageries recorded at this time. The picture may recall Atkins’s Royal Menagerie, in which a liger was born in October 1824 while the menagerie was visiting Windsor; the cub was duly presented to King George IV."
