Two 19th century, Circa 1850 Hongmu, Ch'ing Dynasty, Hsien Feng Period, side chairs presented in excellent condition. Of classic form the solid seats and legs, with box frame stretchers and carved under frieze. A simple scroll back and top rail is complimented by a carved panel of Peach blossom above a blind carved panel to one of the chairs and a carved panel of a knot above a carved panel of a lozenge to the other chair.
Many emblems and symbols are used in Chinese art. The Peach is 'The fruit of life', an emblem of immortality and longevity, a symbol of marriage and prosperity. The knot- An emblem of longevity. The lozenge- a symbol of victory. Overall, the chairs are a superb example of Chinese Art and Construction, functional and the same time, genuine Chinese Antiques.
