Early 20th Century Russian Icon, Framed Oil on Wood Panel,c1910

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Curious Antiques
Description

Stunning early 20th century Russian Icon,c1910. This is a nicely composed and executed oil on wood panel depicting the Madonna and child. The frame and oklad are good examples which display the Icon nicely. The reverse of the wood panel is covered in material which has a lengthy inscription in Cyrillic / Russian which I cannot read, but you can make out a date at the end of 21 Sept 1910. Overall condition is good and as you would expect from an example of this age. There are signs of historic woodworm on the frame (long dormant but treated anyway) and a minor split in the metal Oklad. The wood panel is not currently fixed in the frame but this is easily fixed with a couple of panel pins if preferred. A fine genuine example. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to view the item.

Dimensions:22cm long x 21cm wide x 4cm deep. The price includes FREE UK shipping. I will happily ship worldwide.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique Russian icon is a sacred religious image created within the Eastern Orthodox tradition, typically depicting Christ, Mary, or saints on a wooden panel. These works often featured stylized iconography, gold leaf background detailing, and sometimes metal covers known as oklads or rizas to protect the sacred image beneath.

Traditional Russian icons were painted using egg tempera or oil paints on seasoned hardwood panels, such as linden or pine. They frequently featured hand-beaten brass, silver, or gilt metal oklads, with gilding applied using bole ground and gold leaf.

Authentic early 20th-century Russian icons display natural age-related craquelure on the paint surface, hand-carved joinery or back braces on the wooden panel, and gentle oxidisation on metal overlays. Look for characteristic Cyrillic inscriptions along the borders and traditional gilding showing exposed red bole underneath.

Position an icon as a focal accent on a gallery wall, atop a mantelpiece, or within a quiet reading corner alongside minimalist contemporary furniture. Framing or grouping smaller devotional pieces creates a sophisticated curated wall arrangement in both traditional and modern spaces.

Keep the wooden panel away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and damp conditions to prevent wood warping or paint flaking. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cleaning products or harsh polishes on gilding and metal covers.
