Japonisme was a word invented in the mid 19th century to describe the important inluence of Japanese art and design which became very significant in the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. It was certainly an influence on this liqueur bottle design made by Alfred Clark a London silversmith and retailer (1898-1923). In 1903 Clark moved his retail shop from 20 Old Bond Street to New Bond Street. The sterling silver is stamped with Clark's previous address (so before 1903) and 3 very clear London hallmarks.
It is a beautifully designed piece with the bottle surroundeed by an opening lotus flower with individual silver petals. It stands firmly on claw feet and the intertwined handle culminates with paws holding onto the bottle. The bottle has a pouring lip and would originally have had a glass stopper.
A beautiful and heavy decorative piece of Victorian silver.
