Victorian Officers Camphorwood Chest

19th century
Description

Victorian officers camphorwood chest

This Large Victorian camphorwood trunk was made circa 1870 to be used by a British officer to transport his uniforms and personal effects around the British Empire.

Made of Camphorwood, a wood that has a beautiful natural perfume. It was especially good for transporting garments as insects avoid this wood and so the Uniforms etc were safe from these when in the Far East and India.

This is brass bound to protect the corners and chest during its rough handling on and off carts, sailing ships, and on various pack animals, as it was travelling on the adventures the Officer would have been enduring in the campaigns of the late 19thc.

Imagine what stories this could tell; it is bound to spark the imagination of young and old as you wonder what perils it had seen.

These make superb, interesting coffee tables as a conversation piece in the middle of a room or can be used as good storage elsewhere in the home.

97cms wide 38ins

47cms deep 18 1/2ins

46cms high 18ins

All Measurements are approximate, whilst we take care in measuring there may at times be a very slight difference.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
