Description

A fine pair of sterling silver cauldron salts, these dating from the reign of George II.
They are clearly hallmarked on the base for London 1738, with the maker's mark of Edward Wood. Edward Wood was a specialist salt maker and master to David Hennell, who is turn was the most prolific salt maker in the 8th Century. Some of Edward Wood's salts at displayed at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. He died in 1752.
These cauldron-shaped salts have good gilding. They stand on 3 hoof feet - there is a small amount of damage to the base of one foot, which is shown in the photographs. This does not stop the salt standing squarely on the surface.
